From a one-time stunt to a badge of honor What started as a promo in 2011 has become one of electronic music’s most recognizable live traditions. Inspired by a music video for “Turn Up The Volume,” Steve Aoki brought a cake on stage and smashed it into a fan, creating a moment that would go on to define his shows for over a decade. Since then, “caking” evolved into a full ritual, complete with custom cake specs, pinpoint accuracy, and fans holding “Cake Me” signs at festivals around the world. For many, getting hit became a badge of honor, turning a simple stunt into one of the most iconic forms of crowd interaction in EDM history.
