Find this shocking? This is our life. This is what childhood can look like for siblings of a child with profound autism. For Billie. For Jude. And before anyone says it: no, it’s not Charlie’s fault. We love Charlie more than words. He is not bad. He is not choosing this. But that doesn’t make it less traumatic for his siblings. It doesn’t make it less terrifying in the moment. It doesn’t make it easier to be the parent trying to keep everyone safe at once. This is why I advocate the way I do. Because families like mine need more than awareness that feels comfortable to share. We need help. We need respite. We need services. We need people to understand that profound autism affects the entire family. Even the siblings sitting quietly in the backseat.
