It’s not just “using a phone”—it’s living alongside it almost constantly. The average American now spends about 4.5 to 5 hours per day on their phone, which adds up to over 75 days per year of total time. That means phones quietly consume about one-fifth of your waking life. What makes the 2020s different isn’t just time—it’s frequency. People check their phones roughly 186–205 times per day, which is about once every 5 minutes while awake. Many users also interact with their phones thousands of times daily through taps, scrolling, and notifications. Phones also became psychologically embedded into daily routines. Around 80–90% of people check their phone within an hour of waking up, and over half sleep with it nearby. Over time, this constant checking trains the brain to expect stimulation, which can weaken attention and increase distraction.
