While historians debate the exact details of the story, it inspired the creation of the marathon race at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens.⁠ ⁠ The official marathon distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 km) wasn’t standardised until the 1908 London Olympics, when the course was extended so it could start at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box.
