🐶 Dogs have an incredible sense of routine. Studies show they can track time using circadian rhythms and scent decay, meaning they literally smell how long you’ve been gone. Most dogs begin their “waiting behavior” at roughly the same time each day because they’ve learned exactly when their owner usually returns. When you break that pattern by arriving from a different direction, the surprise reaction is genuine because their entire expectation system gets flipped.
